We Will Solve Your Child’s Reading Problem
For students, the 4th grade is a significant transition period. 4th-grade teachers spend less time teaching students how to read and devote more classroom time to developing greater comprehension and language skills.
4th-grade is also when teachers begin to get serious about vocabulary and it is usually the time where children have to start memorizing definitions. This adds yet another layer of complexity to an already complicated subject. With the introduction of more sophisticated vocabulary coupled with definitions, it’s an easy place for these 9- and 10-year-old students to fall behind. So it’s important to note that just because your child got past 3rd grade the rest of it won’t come automatically.
In 3rd grade, you had to be able to read the word scarce. In the 4th grade now, you have to be able to read the word scarce and also know its meaning: not enough of. In 4th grade, students are no longer learning to read, they are reading to learn. They are given assignments and expected to gain knowledge from those assignments. If your child is reading a paragraph and there are as few as 7 or 8 words that they don’t understand, how can they possibly comprehend what they’ve read? They will surely fall behind.
Is your child making a lot of mistakes on words that look alike?
There are 300 small words that beginning readers make mistakes on because they look alike. (i.e. the th words like there and them, words like where and were, or was and saw.) Every time your child makes a mistake on any of these words it’s like a dagger in their heart and they can’t see the next word. They become unfocused and unconcentrated. If they’re making lots of mistakes on these words, they can’t focus on what the story is about. They end up focusing on how stupid they are and then they don’t want to be there. At the Dicker Reading Method and our 1st grade reading tutoring program, we help your child to gain mastery over their vocabulary and fluency in their reading, overcoming their past struggles and growing into a confident, joyful reader.
