Is your child reading hesitantly, making mistakes on words, sounding out words, substituting one word for another, or getting to the end of a sentence and not remembering what they read? In the early grades (1st–3rd), the comprehension problem is caused by your child developing a hesitant reading style, not being able to read fluently. If your son or daughter reads in a hesitant fashion, they will have problems understanding what they have read. When children make mistakes while reading, they become scattered and unfocused. It makes it difficult for them to concentrate on the words coming up, and even more difficult for them to remember what they have just read. When hesitant readers get to the end of a paragraph, they aren’t able to put it all together and understand what they have read, resulting in the child developing a hate for reading and for school. The only solution is to make your child a fluent reader.
Just because your child got past the first 3 years of reading, the rest of it won’t come automatically. Starting in the upper grades (4th–12th) the comprehension problem can be caused by hesitant reading style, but it may also stem from your child not knowing the meanings of the words they read. Starting in the 4th grade, in addition to knowing how to read words, your child now has to know their definitions. That is why 4th-grade is where marginal illiteracy begins. If your child doesn’t know the meaning of a word, they will never use it in writing and won’t ever speak it; it will be as though they never learned the new word in the first place.
This is why ninety percent of the country never advances beyond a 6th-grade reading level. Schools do not introduce sufficient vocabulary and often only repeat each new word one time. So your child isn’t being exposed to the words they need, and they aren’t seeing them frequently enough to actually remember them. Again, it is as though the words were never being taught at all.
If you were being introduced to 20 new words per week, between 4th grade and 12th grade you would learn less than 3,000 words, equivalent to a 6th grade level of vocabulary development. Now let’s say you’re asked to read a paragraph, and you don’t recognize or understand seven of the words. Those seven words will break your concentration, confuse you, and ultimately prevent you from understanding what you’ve read. To overcome this problem, we introduce our students to 20,000 vocabulary words developmentally and define the words in a much simpler way than the dictionary.

The final facet of the comprehension problem lies in your child finding meaning in the words that they read. On tests and in real life, people need to be able to find and retain information from the written word. Our students are asked a question on every sentence they read in their tutoring sessions. If they don’t know an answer, we have them go back into the story to locate and prove the correct answer. Through this technique, your child will learn to cite sources and draw useful information from text. This helps to develop the child’s literal and inferential comprehension skills and to defeat poor reading comprehension.
